Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah met United Nations Resident Coordinator for Pakistan Mr. Neil Buhne

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah discussed with United Nations Resident Coordinator for Pakistan Mr. Neil Buhne, the work of the United Nations in Sindh and how cooperation with the Government can be strengthened to benefit more people.  They focused on ways to provide more urgent assistance to those affected by drought, and how to reduce their vulnerability to future droughts. Mr Buhne highlighted the opportunities to consolidate Sindh’s food security and agriculture productivity, especially through improved land tenancy governance for all stakeholders. The Chief Minister also took note of the UN’s efforts to support Sindh’s transition to a climate-resilient food system including through transformations in water management. Mr. Buhne complimented the Chief Minister on excellent work done in some localities in  Sindh on reducing the high prevalence of stunted growth, and on the need to expand that work to reach all vulnerable children.  Mr. Buhne appreciated the leadership of the Chief Minister on the strong support to the polio eradication drive in Sindh, discussed the importance  of eradicating the Wild Polio Virus, especially from urban areas,  and the challenges of doing this. They discussed programmes to improve reproductive health of women and to slow population growth, to expand the reach and quality of education for children, efforts to reduce rural poverty, to improve water management, and actions to reduce the effects of climate change on people.  Mr. Buhne appreciated the work of the Chief Minister to have Sindh meet the Sustainable Development Goals and offered UN support to link this closer to the policies and programmes of the provincial government to promote and implement pro-poor policies.  He was joined at the meeting by members of the United Nations Sindh team.

Intercultural Innovation Award – 2019

Promoting Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace : Pakistan won first position in 2019 World Radio Day programmes contest

In connection with the 2019 World Radio Day, (that is being observed every year on 13 February), the United Nations in Pakistan joined Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation, FM 100 and other Broadcasters in the series of radio programmes to promote Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace.

Thematic radio programme prepared by Radio Pakistan has won the first position in the 2019 World Radio Day Contest.

Mr. Neil Buhne, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Pakistan and Ms. Vibeke Jensen, Representative/Director in Pakistan of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) participated in the programme. Continue reading

2019 Reham Al-Farra (RAF) Memorial Journalism Fellowship

The Department of Global Communications (DGC) is accepting applications for the 2019 Reham Al-Farra (RAF) Memorial Journalism Fellowship, which will be held at UN Headquarters in New York from 15 September to 5 October 2019.

The Fellowship will bring a select group of young journalists from around the world to United Nations Headquarters to cover the General Assembly, interview senior officials, and attend special briefings and workshops.

The Fellowship is open to full-time journalists between the ages of 22 and 35 from countries with developing and transitioning economies. A full list of eligible countries is available at ( Pakistan included)

The Fellowship covers the cost of roundtrip air travel to New York and provides a daily subsistence allowance.

Applications must be submitted online at application deadline is 15 April 2019.


The President of the General Assembly strongly condemns the attacks against two mosques, which took place in the city of Christchurch in New Zealand, today.

Ms. Espinosa conveys her deepest condolences to all bereaved families, the people and the Government of New Zealand.

The PGA says that this heinous act of extreme violence against a house of worship is an abhorrent crime. Ms. Espinosa stresses that more must be done to combat intolerance, hate speech and extremism for the sake of humanity.

She wishes all injured in the attacks a speedy recovery.
