The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) launched its flagship publication "Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2010" at the Marriot Hotel, Islamabad on 6 May 2010.
The survey entitled "Asia-Pacific Must Increase Social Spending to Turn Rebound into Recovery" addressed the most important current issues facing the region / Pakistan including
-
V-shaped regional rebound is underway, but the rebound is
fragile and uneven, with a number of downside risks.
-
2010 presents immediate policy challenges: rising inflationary pressures, asset bubbles and appreciating exchange rates in an environment of weak growth.
-
Turning the rebound into a sustained recovery will pose even more complex challenges because the crisis exposed underlying global and regional structural imbalances that built up over decades.
-
At the same time, in crisis, the window has opened to reorient macroeconomic recovery towards fairer, more inclusive and sustainable patterns of development.
-
Redressing these multiple imbalances will see the region increasingly drive its own development and create new sources of economic growth from within the region.
-
A stable and prosperous Asia-Pacific region will be the anchor of future world growth and stability.
The Survey was launched in Pakistan at a press briefing at the Marriot Hotel Islamabad Islamabad at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, 6 May 2010. Dr Ashfaque H Khan Khan, DG & Dean Nust Business school presented and explained salient features of the survey and shed light on the analysis of Pakistan's performance.
The report was also launched on the same day in other cities of the region .
